Globalization

May 9, 2008 / by A_Cherry2

Globalization has become a big thing in the world today.  It has been constantly growing for about the last 25 years.  Many people think that this is a bad thing, and then many believe that it is a good thing.  I think that it is a good thing.  Yes I agree that sweatshops probably aren’t the best things going on in the world today.  But also I don’t know what these people would be doing without this job opportunity.  I think that obviously the working conditions could be better, but if these people don’t have any job then it seems like they’re doing alright in having one.

In one of Thomas Friedman’s documentaries it focuses on the jobs that people in India have received as customer support for some of the biggest companies in the world.  I think that this is great that they are getting the opportunity of this, but I don’t like the fact that we are so ignorant and make them feel so bad to the point where they will change their name to an American name.  This doesn’t make sense, we shouldn’t be doing this to people, but some people just don’t understand that there is an actual soul on the other end of that phone call.  As for the jobs itself I think that this is one way that globalization has turned to a good thing.  These people are making more money than they would without this job opportunity.  There is no way that all of those kids in India would be able to find a job without globalization.

So I agree that there are negatives in globalization but there are also positives in there.  I don’t think that there is really any way to fix it right now.  I don’t think that boycotting Wal-Mart or Starbucks will help really.  I also don’t understand how people can hate Starbucks because they are a big company, because the way I see it is they were also a small company before.  If there is a coffee shop that you always go to now and they become big in the next few years and decide to go national, do you have to start hating them too?
